The Heartland Children’s Academy (HCA), School Project Activities

We use this page to outline just a few of our school activities and programs we offer our students and implement within the school in an effort to create an even better, life relevant learning environment for our kids (now & in the future).

Under the banner of Leadership, Vocation, Academia and Life Relevance, these four principles are what we base the majority of our programs on. We feel that targeting these areas and providing programs and opportunities that have these as the basis then we are well on the way to holistically developing our students and providing them with the skills and support to help them reach their potential and live a happy meaningful life.

Library Lessons and or Reading Extension Program (REP)

In Nepal the ability to read, write, speak fluently and understand the English language is a life skill. Due to the fact that the tourism industry is rapidly growing and fast taking over as the number one employment sector for young Nepali’s, the ability to speak and understand English is crucial. With this in mind and with our recent library renovations we have commenced two programs with the focus being English language development and literacy support under the banner of our “Library Lesson & Reading Extension Program (REP)”. Our library lessons take place throughout each week for each HCA class and give the opportunity to our kids to practice and engender and interest in reading and in which we document their reading progress and areas for further development. The REP is an extension program of our library lessons which are held after school throughout the week in an effort to provide specific support to our kids who both want and we have targeted as needing extra support for reading and English language development.

Here are a few pictures of our students during library lessons and the REP, our library is also always open to the kids before, during and after school and the kids also have the opportunity to borrow books for home reading.

Democratic Friday & Free Choice Initiatives (DCF)

In an effort to further engage our students in activities that they have a natural interest in, from 2009 we have started our DCF Program. Which is based upon an ongoing process of student interest evaluation, and using Friday afternoon as an opportunity to open up the schools facilities & put on activities that our kids have demonstrated a natural curiosity & interest in. Thus, our DCF initiative helps us create an environment that promotes free choice in education, enjoyment through natural learning and in a very small way helps further develop skills and knowledge in certain areas of our student’s life that they are interested in.

Here are a few pictures of our kids participating in Science, sports and Arts/ Craft activities during one our DCF afternoons

HCA’S Agricultural Development Program (HAP)

This program is based upon developing within all our student’s the skills and knowledge necessary to be able to create, grow and sustain a vegetable garden (or kitchen garden as it is referred to in Nepal). We feel that for Nepali’s these skills have relevance and significance to their life as agriculture generally plays a huge part in Nepali life in potential employment and something most generally use everyday to provide for themselves or their family in the home. Thus, as it has benefit for them in terms of useable skills they can utilize within their own life we have set up the HAP program to foster this process. Anything that we grow in the way of vegetables we either use within our own hostel or give to our students.

The program is implemented within every HCA class throughout the year and covers as many relevant topics as possible, such as preparing soil for planting, watering your crop, when to harvest, the use of fertilizers and the benefits of composting plus many more.

Below are a few snapshots of our HCA students participating within our “HAP

Our second major focus with respect to life relevant programs is “IT” skills for the office and home, at this stage equipping the school with the facilities for this program is one part of our future plan.

Student Quality Circle (SQC) & Student Representative Council (SRC)

These programs are aimed at developing leadership skills and qualities within our HCA students in an effort to create and engender future leaders of Nepal with a different thought approach to handling today’s relevant issues. Both programs are teacher facilitated but the programs they run are solely developed and coordinated by two student councils made up of a range of different aged HCA students. They collaborate together to run education programs and activities based upon providing support and enjoyment for our kids and the surrounding community.  For example their joint focus currently is environmental care, personal hygiene knowledge development and appropriate rubbish disposal.

Below are a few pictures of some of our kids who are the schools leaders within these programs.
